Research from male cancer charity Orchid reveals UK men know more about breast and other women's cancers than those which affect only men

1 in 3 men say they're most knowledgeable about breast cancer compared to 1 in 10 men who are familiar with the signs and symptoms of testicular cancer

1 in 10 women say they don't check their breasts compared to 1 in 4 men who don't check their testes

1 in 3 men are not aware they can check themselves for lumps

Only 1 in 5 men admit to being clued up on prostate cancer

1 in 6 men think prostate cancer can affect women

1 in 4 Brits have a family member or close friend with testicular or prostate cancer

Achievements

In recent years, the generosity of charitable trusts and foundations has enabled Orchid to deliver much-needed information and services, and to forge ahead in research for male cancer patients and their relatives. We hope to continue to help deliver this information and to support the thousands of men and their families affected by male cancers through our ambitious plans.

We have successfully campaigned to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of male specific cancers and to encourage men to see their GP as early as possible. We have also worked closely with a range of healthcare professionals, other voluntary agencies, schools and libraries to provide support and information and raise awareness of the services offered by Orchid.

Between 2007 and 2008, Orchid sent out over 50,000 leaflets, resource packs and DVDs. A further 2,000 information and awareness raising posters were distributed to healthcare professional, libraries, voluntary organisations and support agencies. Between 2008-2009 there has been an increase of 20% in visitors to our website. In 2009, there have been over 28,000 visitors to our website.

Orchid has made advances in cancer research including highly successful treatments for men with aggressive testicular cancers, and for treatment for prostate cancer involving the use of chemotherapy in hormone resistant patients. Our research is reviewed and monitored by Orchid's independent Scientific Advisory Board.Please click here for further information.
