If your GP is worried that a lump on your penis may be cancer, he will refer you to a hospital specialist. The specialist will question you about the lump, examine you and probably take a sample (biopsy) from any abnormal area, usually under anaesthetic. This is then examined under the microscope.
If the biopsy shows that you have cancer your doctor may want to do some further tests to check whether or not the cancer is localised or not. The results of these tests will help the specialist to decide on the best type of treatment for you.
A series of other tests including a chest x-ray, a CT scan or an MRI scan, and a biopsy of the lymph nodes (glands in your groin) may be done to establish whether the cancer has spread.
