One in five people in the UK die without a will, many people do not believe they have enough money to make a difference. However, making a will is the only way for you to decide exactly how your money is spent and where it goes after you die.
Each year many people decide to leave money to charities in their wills, there are a number of different ways you can do this to help Orchid.
Leaving a legacy to Orchid, either in the form of a fixed amount or a percentage of your estate, will not only help us in our work but may also reduce Inheritance Tax on your estate.
If you do leave a legacy to Orchid, it would be appreciated if you would complete and send us the pledge form (PDF). You are, of course, under no obligation to do so. The information will be treated as strictly confidential.
There are three types of legacy with recommended wording listed below. These are suitable for English Wills (as of 2006). For other countries, please consult your solicitor.
1. A Residuary Bequest
You may wish to leave specific sums and properties to a named person, and the rest of your estate, or some fraction therefore, to Orchid. The recommended wording for such a bequest is:
Subject to the payment of my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses and any legacies, I give all the residue of my estate, both real and personal, to The Orchid Cancer Appeal (registered charity number 1080540) of St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, EC1A 7BE. The receipt of the Treasurer, or other authorised officer, shall be sufficient discharge of the same.
2. A Bequest of a Fixed Sum
You may wish to leave a specific sum of money to Orchid. The recommended wording for such a bequest is:
I give to The Orchid Cancer Appeal (registered charity number 1080540) of St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, EC1A 7BE, the sum of £________ free of all taxes and duties and linked to the retail price index from today and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer, or other authorised officer, shall be sufficient discharge of the same.
3. Adding a Codicil to an Existing Will
If you have already written your Will, you can include Orchid by adding a Codicil which avoids the expense of changing your Will. All you need to do is complete the attached form. This should be signed by you and witnessed by two people, and can then be appended to your existing Will.
